City of Johannesburg Internships 2025 / 2026

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) — through its Department of Environmental Infrastructure Services — is inviting unemployed South African graduates to apply for its 2025/2026 Internship Programme.

  • Application Closing Date: 22 October 2025

  • Location: City of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

  • Stipend: R10 109.86 per month (basic salary, no additional benefits)

  • Contract Duration: Up to 18 months


  • This position is designed to give successful candidates valuable, hands‑on experience in a public‑sector environment. Participants will sign both an internship agreement and an employment contract, committing to full participation for the full period.

Available Internship Areas

1. Registry & Archiving
Requirements: Matric (Grade 12/NQF Level 4) + currently studying toward a diploma or certificate.
Duties: Provide administrative and document‑management support, including classifying, registering, scanning, filing, retrieving and disposing of records according to legislation; assist in office admin and ensure smooth information flow within the department.
Skills & Competencies: Good computer literacy (MS Word, Excel), strong interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, time‑management, ability to work both in a team and independently.

2. Finance
Requirements: National Diploma or Degree in Accounting / Management Accounting / Finance (or equivalent).
Duties: Assist in accounting functions, procurement, creditors/debtors management, stock control, record‑keeping and compliance with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and CoJ supply‑chain policies.
Skills & Competencies: Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel), communication and coordination skills, knowledge of GRAP accounting standards.

3. Administration Officer (Programme)
Requirements: National Diploma or Degree in Office Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field.
Duties: Support administrative tasks including filing, scheduling, correspondence, report preparation; maintain accurate employee data, assist with audits, HR and Health & Safety documentation.
Skills & Competencies: Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel), strong communication and organisational skills, basic knowledge of HR and admin processes.

4. Water Management & Biodiversity
Requirements: Degree in Town & Regional Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geoscience or Geohydrology.
Duties: Support sub‑directorates such as Water Service Regulation, Catchment Management and Open Space Planning; assist with data consolidation, programme monitoring, administrative coordination of policy documents and development applications.
Skills & Competencies: Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel), strong communication and coordination skills, knowledge of environmental and water legislation.

5. Energy
Requirements: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering, Construction Project Management, Energy Studies or related discipline.
Duties: Assist with policy, strategy and plan development for city‑wide energy compliance and sustainability; support policy implementation, stakeholder engagement, project‑management and report‑writing.
Skills & Competencies: Knowledge of climate change and the energy sector, project development experience, strong computer literacy (MS Word, Excel), good communication and report‑writing skills.
