About the Programme
The South African Weather Service invites South African citizens to apply for a suite of development programmes for 2026. These include full bursaries, internships and learnerships in the fields of meteorology, atmospheric sciences, and weather observation. Successful candidates will receive financial support, gain practical training, and work with a national meteorological science institution.
Available Opportunities
A) Forecasting Internship – Postgraduate Certificate in Weather Forecasting (Ref: FOI:01/11/2026)

Targeted at graduates who hold an Honours degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences.

Requires mathematics at second‑year university level and physical sciences at first‑year level.

The qualification should comply, or nearly comply, with the internationally recognised meteorological competency framework.

The internship runs for one year, full‑time, starting February 2026 at SAWS headquarters in Pretoria.

What’s covered: Full tuition fees + monthly stipend.

Recommended traits: Good interpersonal skills and basic computer literacy.
B) BSc Honours in Meteorology Bursary (Ref: HONS:01/10/2026)

Available to students who are studying or intend to study towards a BSc Honours in Meteorology at a South African university.

Applicants must provide proof of registration or admission for the Honours year.

What’s covered: Full tuition fees + monthly stipend.

Recommended traits: Analytical thinking, good communication, and computer skills.
C) National Certificate: Weather Observations Learnership (Ref: NCW:01/11/2026)

A 12‑month training programme at the SAWS Regional Training Centre in Pretoria for applicants with Grade 12 (Matric).

Minimum academic requirements: Grade 12 with at least 50% in Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy), 50% in Physical Sciences, and 50% in English.

A valid driver’s licence is required, or the willingness to obtain one during the programme at your own cost.

What’s provided: Monthly stipend during the training period.

Preference will be given to female candidates and applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

After successful completion, there is the possibility of placement at SAWS regional offices.
